How to decorate with blue pillows

Decorating with pillows can add so much to your interior – the color choice will make up part of your home color palette, the fabric patterns act as pieces of art and the textures add to the warmth of your home. One thing to keep in mind is that you should choose your throw pillows in context of the entire space – some should flatter your wall color, while others your rug or flooring and others could repeat some color in art work in the room.

Just about every room in your home can benefit from the use of pillows – the entry, hallway benches, living room sofas and occasional chairs and bedrooms. If you want to add interest and don’t know how, then pillows are your best friend. Here are a few easy to follow tips:

Choosing one cohesive color palette and sticking to it, is the key. This bring your design together and there is no guessing and wondering what will work. Look at this example below, using just blue and white in different patterns and color is so effective.

Choosing patterns – my advice is always to choose one organic or busy pattern, one geometric or simple print (this could include a plaid or stripe) and one solid. This basic formula always works no matter the setting, it could be the casual patio area or even a more formal master bedroom. For an example in this master bedroom photo, it is exactly the formula I mentioned – it is pretty much fool proof. So just remember this golden rule – one color in 3 patterns works in all spaces!

How to arrange them? When it comes to arranging pillows whether it is on your sofa or on your bed, symmetry is your best friend. On a sofa or a sectional it is best to ‘bookend’ the pillows – this means that you should have matching pillows in each corner – they should be same fabric and same size. Your corner pillows should also be the biggest and as you add pillows towards the centre, they should get smaller.

All shapes and sizes! Create visual interest by using different sizes and shapes. Here is our guide to choosing the right size. If you have a standard sofa the 20 inch square pillows will work best. If you have a larger sofa or a sectional you could use larger end pillows, they typically can range from 22-24 inches. If you have a sofa with a lower back you might want to consider using 18 inch pillows. Once you have the end pillow sizes established (these are called the base pillow and they should always be square) then you add your smaller interest pillows – these could be smaller squares or rectangular.

Using blue and white are great ways to bring the tranquil atmosphere of water into your home. By using our tips in this blog you can easily create that relaxed beach home feel without using clichéd décor items such as shells, lighthouses and nautical charts – the art is in suggesting the coastal feel! The same can be said for a lake house – use the same tips but now add a bit of forest green here and there and you have the perfect lake house atmosphere!

And a final tip – mix inexpensive pillows with expensive pillows to stretch your budget. Spend the extra dollars on the busy organic patterns and save some money on the solids!
