Favourite Green Paints
How else loves green? I must admit I love all colour, but I have a special affection for green. In a recent Benjamin Moore colour course I took I discovered that Malachite (a mineral) is the oldest known green pigment and was discovered in Egyptian tomb paintings and in European paintings dating as far back as the 15th and 16th centuries. I was a geologist in my previous career I find it interesting that these minerals were used to make our lives pretty! Terra Verde or Green Earth was another pigment that was used, also obtained from a mineral called Glauconite, a type of green clay.
Why are we so drawn to the colour green – the obvious is that is the colour of nature, the colour of new life and growth and maybe the best reason is that green is the most restful colour to the eyes – on the colour wheel green is opposite to red, an emotionally charged colour.
As Benjamin Moore paint colour consultant I have noticed that the three colours that most home owners have a difficult time choosing are whites, blues and greens and how to combine these. Did you know that all colours have a prominent undertone? But what does that mean you might ask? All paint colours are created by mixing two hues or more and when one of these hues are visually more prominent then that becomes the undertone. Undertones can be difficult to notice, so the best way to ‘look’ for undertones is too visually compare paint side by side and against a complete white background. If you want to compare your paint samples, the best white too choose is Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly White - this white does not have an undertone and will help you choose the best colour for your room.
So does green paints have undertones? Yes it does, do you remember mixing paint as a kid? Then you will remember that yellow and blues mixed together will make green, so these are the two undertones to look out for in green paints. There are so many greens to choose from, some will have yellow undertones while others will have blue undertones.
I love playing around with paint colours and I suggest you get a few samples from your local Benjamin Moore paint store and test these samples on a large area, and remember to paint two coats to get a true idea of the colour.
